In mid 2012 while I was living in Abu Dhabi I felt compelled to visit Ulpotha, a village in the jungle of Sri Lanka. I was injured, stressed out, and dishearteningly convinced that though I’d been practicing and teaching yoga for years, I may never do yoga without pain again. There in Sri Lanka I met my teacher, Mithila Ubayasekara, who introduced me to the style of yoga that literally change my life: YogaMonks. After just two classes with Mithila I had regained movement in my body and was in significantly less pain. I was hooked, and have been doing this practice literally every single day since then and have also traveled internationally many times to keep up with my teachers. And it’s been absolutely worth it.
To me the YogaMonks method is nothing short of extraordinary. Aimed at removing blockages from the spine, all movement comes from this space. Through the meditation of concentration on whatever area of the body that’s meant to move, we work to send energy directly from the spine and thus begin to unravel all the tangles of fascia bound along the path. Muscles move by proxy as the energetic body guides the way. The method of movement accesses an energetic level far beyond the physical, and truly provides a gateway to the Divine.
Physically, my experience after more than a year of practicing these sequences is that my body has drastically changed. I can literally feel the connection between my hands and my feet. I can now walk into a vinyasa class and flow through the entire sequence with grace. I can walk down the street and feel the energy of my spine propelling me forward. I am acutely aware of things going on inside my body. My breath has naturally deepened. And I can even see these things going on in others as well.
As if the physical change weren’t enough, mentally and emotionally I’d had profound development. My mind is more calm, more focused, than I ever thought possible. My heart is more open and accepting. And my life has suddenly become exactly how I’ve always wanted it to be.
There is more to these sequences than the obvious physical change. I’ve seen it in myself, and I’ve seen it happen in others. Yoga Monks has the capacity to propel you from one reality to another.
